Global giant reinforces importance of industry-standard HomePlug powerline communications technology to the connected home market SAN FRANCISCO, CA- September 27, 2005 - The HomePlug® Powerline Alliance, Inc., a global industry consortium that creates international specifications for high-speed powerline networking products and services, today announced that General Electric's Security business (NYSE:GE), has joined the Implementers' Forum Board of Directors of the Alliance. The addition of General Electric (GE) to the Alliance's Implementers' Forum Board of Directors underscores the important role of HomePlug technology in the rapidly growing digital home market. With robust, whole-house coverage, built-in security and ease of use, HomePlug technology enables in-home equipment and "white-goods" manufacturers to increase sales by enhancing their customers' digital experience. The Alliance has three Promoter's Groups focused on the development and promotion of compatible, interrelated powerline communications standards for high-performance in-home data networking and content distribution (HomePlug 1.0 and AV), to-the-home access technology (HomePlug BPL), and within-the-home infrastructure and inter-appliance communication (HomePlug Command and Control). With HomePlug technology as the baseline for home networking, content distribution and home automation, HomePlug-enabled products from leading companies like GE will be able to communicate with other consumer electronics products, personal computer platforms, security systems and general-purpose appliances, simply by plugging them into an electrical outlet. "The global market for HomePlug technology is rapidly expanding beyond home data networking and Internet sharing into rich multimedia content distribution and home automation," said Matt Theall, President of the HomePlug Powerline Alliance and powerline initiative manager for Intel Corporation. "GE Security will be a valuable addition to the HomePlug Board of Directors as the industry continues its rapid deployment of HomePlug-enabled products and the Alliance moves forward with its HomePlug Command and Control specification."
